IP2: From Theory to Practice - Semester A

Blended

27 Sep 2027

Course overview

IP2: From Theory to Practice is a 15-credit Level 7 module designed to develop the clinical reasoning and prescribing skills required to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world optometric practice.

You will build on your knowledge of pharmacology, therapeutics and patient safety and apply it to the assessment and management of a range of ocular conditions, including glaucoma, inflammation, infection and acute red eye.

The module focuses on structured clinical reasoning and safe prescribing in complex, vulnerable and emergency presentations. You will explore the management of patients with additional clinical considerations, including older people, children, pregnancy and polypharmacy, while developing your understanding of shared-care pathways and multidisciplinary working.

Learning is highly clinically focused, using case discussions, interactive workshops, simulation and team-based activities to develop confidence in making safe, evidence-based and person-centred prescribing decisions.

The module provides an opportunity to integrate clinical knowledge, professional judgement, communication and patient safety when managing realistic prescribing scenarios.

Assessment

Assessment is 100% coursework and consists of two elements:

Case-Based Management Assignment – 60%

Clinical Prescribing Simulation – 40%

The case-based assignment requires you to apply clinical knowledge and prescribing principles to complex clinical scenarios, demonstrating structured clinical reasoning and safe, evidence-based management.

The clinical prescribing simulation provides an opportunity to demonstrate clinical reasoning, prescribing accuracy, communication and person-centred care in a realistic clinical scenario.

Both assessment elements must be passed independently, with a minimum grade of 50% required for each element.
