Course Details

This work based learning module is designed for therapeutic radiographers who wish to develop competency in the localisation, planning and holistic management of patients requiring palliative radiotherapy. Its aim is to build students’ knowledge, understanding, clinical skills and evaluative abilities so they can competently manage a range of palliative radiotherapy scenarios, including bone metastases and other relevant tumour sites. There is also the option to include the radiotherapy localisation of well-defined lung tumours.

The majority of learning occurs through supervised clinical practice within a radiotherapy localisation suite, where students apply local protocols to develop safe and effective practice. Alongside experiential learning, students engage with electronic learning resources, independent study, and are invited to attend optional virtual classroom sessions. Ongoing guidance from the module leader supports students in becoming reflective, autonomous practitioners.

Using an inquiry based approach, students critically evaluate evidence to consolidate their understanding of palliative radiotherapy. Module content covers anatomy and pathology relevant to palliative treatment; imaging techniques; tumour management; quality, legal and professional issues associated with role extension; radiobiology and side effects; holistic and palliative care principles; and evidence based approaches to localisation, planning and treatment. Theories of reflection, clinical reasoning, judgement and leadership also underpin learning.

Formative activities and supportive feedback are integrated throughout to help students develop the skills required for successful completion of the module.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles underpinning the independent localisation, planning and prescribing of palliative radiotherapy.
  • Critically appraise the holistic needs of patients receiving palliative radiotherapy identifying appropriate management based on evidence-based research.

Skills and Attributes

Successful students will typically...

  • Evidence clinical expertise and leadership in radiotherapy localisation of well-defined tumours identified for palliative treatment based on judgements made from analysing and evaluating appropriate information.
  • Reflect on their own practice with reference to the evidence-base, demonstrating clinical reasoning, justification and decision making when undertaking radiotherapy localisation of tumours considered for palliative radiotherapy.
