Course overview
Course Details
This module covers the fundamental science and technical principles of computed tomography (CT) in enhanced and advanced CT radiographer applications. The module is chiefly aimed at qualified radiographers.
Typical module content would consider CT colonography, cardiac CT, HRCT technique and angiographic studies.
Understanding of the science and terminology of CT is essential to safe working practice in the area and provides a necessary underpinning for considering clinical CT applications. Experiential learning is essential to the satisfactory completion of this module. Students are required to synthesise the relationships between CT operating parameters, image quality, scan time and patient safety. A clinical placement in CT is advisory.
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate a critical awareness of the components and safe operation of CT equipment.
- Have a comprehensive understanding of the scientific principles of CT including data acquisition, image production, and image optimisation.
- Understand the complex relationships between human tissue type, scan parameters and image appearances on CT, including the use of contrast agents.
- Independently critically evaluate CT scanning techniques and resultant images in order to generate solutions to errors arising.
Assessment
Coursework 1 should be an evaluation of a patient pathway
A 15-minute narrated PowerPoint presentation
Coursework 2 should be a critical evaluation of a scanning protocol.
