Course overview

This module builds on the Research Methods in Health and Social Care and Preparation for Research Project in Health and Social Care modules. In this "research−based" module, students undertake inquiry−based learning as they implement and document their chosen approach. The module enables students to enhance their personal and professional development and contribute to the Health and Social Work evidence base through the completion of a research project. Students will work individually with supervision support and can draw on statistical support where necessary.

Students will have been provided with support to refine their research question and developed their methodology in the Preparation for Research Project in Health and Social Care module. They will be advised not to deviate significantly from the work developed in this prior module. Students must produce an individual written piece of work. They may choose from a range of options including quantitative research, qualitative research, mixed methods, systematic reviews, literature reviews, retrospective data analysis, audit and evaluation of a health or social care innovation. The health or social care innovation may relate to a change in policy or procedure and is intended to provide evidence to support improvements in health or social care. In each option, the work must address a research question.

Knowledge and Understanding:
Successful students will typically
KU1 - Understand the critical application of suitable methods of analysis to the research data.

Intellectual, Practical and Transferable Skills:
Successful students will typically:
IPTS1 - Undertake a research project with appropriate and achievable aims and objectives.
