Course overview

The aim of this two-day course is to provide a comprehensive overview of the principles and practice of cervical cancer screening.

The first day of this course will be delivered face to face on campus and day 2 will be a practical, and the group will be divided into two for your safety and learning experience. 


The course covers the following topics:

  • The incidence and prevalence of cervical cancer in the UK and locally.
  • The risk factors associated with cervical cancer and how these may be minimised or managed.
  • The role of audit and other quality assurance measures in cervical screening and its improvement in women's health

Assessment
The assessment for this course will be a practice-based assessment (PBA).

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate a high level of respect and professional responsibility in communicating with patients, their carers and the wider healthcare team.  Demonstrate a sensitive and compassionate approach to the cervical screening consultation, providing information to the patient in an individualised way to ensure informed consent, always ensuring confidentiality. 
  2. Understand the incidence and prevalence of cervical cancer in the UK and locally, including the risk factors associated with cervical cancer and how these may be reduced or managed.  Understand and be able to communicate effectively with patients, having consideration for equality, diversity and inclusion with the patient population, and the impact of HPV and its relationship to cervical health. 
  3. Discuss and demonstrate safe practice in relation to cervical sample taking and the efficient and safe transport of samples to the local laboratory.  Demonstrate a high professional standard in relation to health and safety practices in all aspects of cervical screening.

Prerequisites

The following UK registered healthcare professionals are eligible to train to undertake the role of cervical sample taker:

  • registered nurses
  • registered nursing associates
  • registered midwives
  • physician associates who are registered on the Physician Associate Managed Voluntary Register (PAMVR)
    registered healthcare professionals working in integrated sexual health (ISH) clinics
  • General Medical Council (GMC) registered medical doctors

You must hold current registration with a professional body to undertake this course.

 You must also be working in an area where the is an experience cervical sample taker to be your mentor.

DBS is required.
