Course overview

This is a bespoke course for Herts Community Trust - pre approval needs to be obtained to apply.


Who should attend the course?

This study session is intended for healthcare professionals, who work in an area where they are required to perform cannulation or phlebotomy as part of their role.

Prior to attendance you are required to have downloaded the Trust guidelines on IV medicines management, venepuncture and cannulation and read them.

You are also required to undertake the self-directed e-learning IV Passport prior to attendance.


Aims and content

The aim of this session is to offer practitioners the contemporary critical knowledge and skills to be able to safely and competently perform cannulation & phlebotomy.

This 3.5-hour practical study session will allow the participant to explore the key factors underpinning the principles of venepuncture and cannulation in the community:

  • Be able to demonstrate an awareness of choosing an appropriate vein and the resources required to undertake this procedure.
  • Understand procedures such as infection prevention and control and sharps management, to ensure safe practice.
  • Demonstrate understanding of local policies pertaining to venepuncture, phlebotomy and cannulation.
  • Be able to successfully demonstrate venepuncture, phlebotomy and cannulation in practice using a manikin.
  • Be able to demonstrate an understanding and sound knowledge of the complications that can occur and appropriate prevention and management of such complications.
  • Be able to demonstrate an awareness of the importance of safe IV infusion following cannulation particularly relating to the administration of intravenous antibiotics.
