Course overview
The 2 day course is aimed at any registered health practitioner new to immunisation.
Taught by Helen Donovan M.Ed. BSc. RN, RHV, Queen’s Nurse, FRSPH, independent nurse consultant, specialist nurse in vaccination.
The course meets the requirements of the National minimum standards and the core curriculum for immunisation training as set out by the UKHSA.
The National Minimum standards define the education learning and core curriculum for any health care practitioner involved in the delivery of immunisation and vaccination services.
Learning objectives
The course covers the learning requirements set out in the national minimum standards.
The aims of immunisation, national vaccine policy and schedules.
The immune response to vaccines and how vaccines work.
Vaccine preventable diseases (Green Book and the course booklet provide further information).
The different types of vaccines, their composition and the indications and contraindications.
Current issues in immunisation.
Communicating with patients, parents and carers about vaccines.
Legal issues in immunisation.
Storage and handling of vaccines.
Correct administration of vaccines.
Documentation, record keeping and reporting.
Strategies for optimising immunisation uptake.
