The course is primarily designed for diagnostic and therapeutic radiographers who administer intravenous substances including contrast agents as part of their work.  Other suitably qualified health care practitioners are also eligible.

This blended course will initially provide you with a narrated PowerPoint which will introduce the method of delivery, talk you through all elements of the course and explain the assessment and online portfolio to you.

Following on from this, you will attend the university campus for 1 day to complete the teaching elements of the course. This will include participating in discussion groups to consolidate what you have been learning from the remote resources, undertaking the practical IV cannulation training and complete a 1-hour computer-based test. Cannulation practice in your departments cannot commence until practical training and the written assessment have been successfully completed.   

There is a theoretical and practical component to the course.
The theoretical component will be delivered using a blended learning approach including directed study.

Topics covered include:

• Anatomy and physiology
• Medico-legal issues
• Contrast agents and their physiological effects
• Emergency situations and “at risk” groups
• Injection Procedure
  

The practical component will be undertaken in the participants' working environment with supervision from suitably trained clinical staff. 

Assessment details
To be eligible for the course the participant must be working in an environment where they will be undertaking intravenous injections of substances. It is essential that they are assigned a named supervisor who will be responsible for their clinical training.
Assessment involves satisfactory completion of an in-course test prior to clinical work and completion of a clinical portfolio.
Successful participants who are state registered with a regulatory body such as the HCPC or NMC will normally be eligible for The College of Radiographers Certificate in Administering Intravenous Injections.
