Course Overview:

The MSc Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences course and its specialised pathways is designed to enable you to enhance your current knowledge and understanding in the field of diagnostic and therapeutic radiography and give you opportunities to challenge and critically evaluate your professional practice. The aim is to advance your skills as a professional and develop your career so that you can practice safely, effectively and legally.


The Medical Ultrasound pathway is for professionals who wish to develop competency in the field of ultrasound. Clinical modules are offered in the areas of obstetrics, gynaecology, abdominal and vascular ultrasound. To apply please visit Medical Ultrasound


The Clinical Radiographic Reporting pathway is designed for students who want to develop competency in the extended role of clinical radiographic reporting and helps you specialise in this specific area of practice. Clinical modules are offered in musculoskeletal reporting and chest. The Advanced Radiotherapy and Oncology Practice pathway specialises in the field of radiotherapeutic practice. Many of the options develop competencies for advanced practice such as in the palliative care and breast localisation modules.  To apply please visit Advanced Radiotherapy and Oncology Practice


All pathways include a significant level of work-based learning and give you the opportunity to focus on independent learning in order to gain problem solving and decision making skills. You are encouraged throughout each module to tailor the learning outcomes in a way that it benefits your current experience and serves your individual service development needs. In addition, all modules include a solid theoretical background foundation that relates to practices.


Professional Accreditation:

The MSc Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences course is accredited by the College of Radiographers.  The Medical ultrasound pathway is accredited by the Consortium for Accreditation of Sonographic Education (CASE).

Who is it for?

The course is suitable for radiographers and health care professionals who want to specialise in this area and are interested in advancing their existing skills or acquiring new ones. It is designed to meet your needs whether you are in full or part-time employment.


Course Structure:

The course is flexible and modular allowing you to create a programme of study to meet your personal development and career aspirations. To attain a Master’s award you need to complete 180 credits. There are also interim awards available:

Postgraduate certificate (PgC) (60 credits)
Postgraduate diploma (PgD) (120 credits)


The rate and pace of study are up to you. You have up to 6 years to complete your master’s course; however, most students complete in 3-4 years and study 3-4 modules per year.

The Master’s degree consists of three elements: core; research and optional modules (optional modules may comprise additional core modules or interprofessional modules).

The price quoted above is for a 15 credit module in the 2025/26 academic year and applies to students who are assessed as Home fee payers ONLY. Fees will differ for students assessed as Overseas fee payers. Fee assessment decisions follow UKCISA (UK Council for International Student Affairs) guidance, which is based on UK law and government regulations. Please note that to access this funding, you must enrol on the full MSc programme; funding is not available for individual modules or interim awards (for example, a Postgraduate Diploma).
