Course overview
Course Description:
The aims of this module are to advance the practitioner’s knowledge in the provision of pharmaceutical care. A particular focus of this module is service provision for patients and stakeholders. Students are expected to consider the provision of pharmaceutical and patient care services and the theoretical application of frameworks relevant to monitor and improve the provision of these services.
Service review and evaluation applies to both clinical and non-clinical service provisions. Students are expected to develop their knowledge, refine their skills and apply evidence-based knowledge/practice in the management of issues concerned with their patients.
There is also an expectation that students will consider the workforce and how processes can be improved to facilitate the efficient and effective delivery of services by staff.
Students will be expected to undertake a service review/evaluation as well as propose a service improvement strategy relevant to their area of practice. Leadership and management strategies are covered to make students aware of factors which may be influential at organisational levels.
The learning outcomes of this module will be achieved by a variety of methods including:
- Experiential learning in the workplace facilitated by a work-based tutor.
- Independent learning, independent analysis and identification of learning needs related to continuing professional development.
- Independent review of materials available for e-learning and structured reading.

Assessment Details:
Service review (audit/service evaluation) and poster presentation.
Service improvement proposal report.
All individual elements of assessment must be passed.
Learning Outcomes:
Knowledge and Understanding
Successful students will typically:
- Exhibit an in-depth knowledge and understanding of audit and service evaluation as an aspect of clinical governance within the NHS.
- Appraise various strategies utilised in the assessment of service provision and identification of service.
- Apply both theoretical and research-based knowledge in the conduct of service review, evaluation and quality improvement in their area of practice.
Intellectual, Practical and Transferable Skills
Successful students will typically:
- Design and undertake a service review/evaluation relevant to their practice, utilising basic inquiry skills.
- Use relevant health service quality improvement tools and frameworks to justify the basis of their approach to their service review and improvement proposal.
- Undertake appropriate data collection and analyses and its subsequent interpretation in order to draw substantive conclusions about the status of a service provision in their place of work.
- Critically examine factors influencing service provision and key issues associated with managing change including leadership, strategies in negotiation and conflict management.

Course delivery
Learner Hours: Scheduled – 50 hours including tutorials, simulation, directed learning, problem based learning and assessments. Independent - 250 hours including work-related learning, individual work based learning.

Prerequisites
Pre-Requisites required to undertake the course:
- A first degree, in pharmacy and registration as a pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
- Candidates must be working (employed or self-employed) within an organisation providing pharmacy services and the responsibilities the candidate undertakes requires direct contact with patients.
- Candidates undertaking the Pharmacist Independent Prescribing module must have confirmation of an appropriate designated prescribing practitioner willing to support and assess the practitioner in practice.
- Candidates must have access to their patients’ health related data such as outcomes of clinical examinations, observations or laboratory test results where applicable.
- Normally the candidate should be employed (including self-employed) in their practice role for at least 15 hours per week.
- Normally the candidate will have a work-based tutor in their workplace. In exceptional circumstances, the university will allocate an academic tutor, for example, for locum pharmacists.
