Course overview

The aims of this module are to enable students to develop specialised knowledge and skills related to the emotional and mental well-being of children, young people and their families across diverse settings. It encompasses screening, assessment, prevention and intervention for prevalent emotional and mental health issues. Furthermore, students will develop proficiency in using research and evidence-based tools to enhance mental health and family well-being, all while critically assessing the influence of mental health policies on mitigating social isolation among demographic groups.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of how emotional and mental health affects the wellbeing of children and young people.
  • Critically discuss the role of early intervention, prevention, and early signs of emotional and mental health problems in children, young people, and  their families.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of infants, children, young people and parental mental health conditions.
  • Critically examine mental health policies and their impact on addressing and mitigating social isolation among diverse groups.
  • Be able to listen, consult with, care, and support children, young people and their families on mental health concerns and presentations in complex and challenging situation.
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of research and evidence-based strategies in holistic mental health promotion and broaden interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Foster cultural competence to address disparities within diverse communities and apply research and evidence-based tools and interventions for mental health support within your scope of practice.

    Assessment

Coursework 100%. A reflective patchwork assessment focussed on the mental health and wellbeing of children, young people and adults within the context of their specific field of practice.
